Birthstone August: Peridot
The Birthstone for August is the Peridot. And, according to the American Gem Trade Association, the Peridot has been adored since ancient times. It was even prized by the ancient Egyptians over 3500 years ago, where they referred to it as the “gem of the sun”.
Where do they come from? Australia, Hawaii, the Congo, Norway, Egypt, Arizona, China, Burma and Pakistan.
Name: Arabic word “faridat” meaning gem. Egyptians called it the “gem of the sun”.
Legends: Hawaiians called the stone “divine tears wept by the volcano goddess Pele”. (Peridot’s are formed by volcanic activity). Peridot’s possess healing properties and have the ability to ward off nightmares & evil.
Hardness: 6.5 – 7 Mohs Hardness Scale
