There has been a void in what is available for men in the jewelry industry until now. The upward trend in mens jewelry is growing stronger each day. And the success of the Simmons’ line proves that men want designs aimed just at them instead of jewelers trying to pass off larger women’s jewelry as men’s jewelry. The handsome clean lines of Russell Simmons’ mens jewelry designss have great appeal to hip men of all ages.

You know every once in a while there is something in life that triggers self examination and for the diamond industry it’s a movie set in 1999 at the height of Sierra Leone’s civil war. It’s made us take additional action, this year in particular, to strengthen and improve our industry’s already existing chain of warranties.

Things have come along way since our industry has adopted the Kimberly Process in 2003. We are by no means 100% perfect and I don’t think any industry is but we are acting responsibly and we’ve managed to reduce the percentage of conflict diamonds in the U.S. to less than 1%. To reduce it further consumers should continue to ask their jeweler for conflict free diamonds and refrain buying from companies that don’t have a written policy and warranties from their vendors regarding conflict diamonds. To see J.R.Dunn’s chain of warranties and policy click here.

On the subject of social accountability and ethics in the jewelry industry, my family and I were so impressed with the standards of Cut by Tolkowsky ideal cut diamonds that I feel compelled to share their outstanding guarantee! This is one of many brands we are extremely proud to represent.

Direct from the Tolkowsky website:

Our Group of companies has been complying for years with the Best Practice Principles and implementing professional, environmental and ethical standards necessary to ensure consumer confidence in both our natural diamonds and their origin.

Specifically, we are guaranteeing that all our stones have not been treated, do not contain simulants and are not synthetic. “Cut by Tolkowsky” diamonds do not result from non-ethical practices like provenance from areas involved in conflict or human suffering, harming the health or welfare of individuals or child labour.

Our award-winning state of the art manufacturing facilities are both SA8000 and ISO9001-200 certified, which corresponds to the highest level of Social Accountability and working conditions.

By acquiring the rough stones for our manufacturing needs directly from the DeBeers affiliate D.T.C. and other Best Practice Principles compliant companies, and having integrated all the manufacturing processes in-house, our Group of companies ensures that all the “Cut by Tolkowsky” diamonds are completely traceable, so that the integrity of our diamond supply is never breached.

As a company we want to ensure that we buy diamonds and diamond jewelry from suppliers who comply with all Kimberley Process requirements. Since 2004 we have been demanding that all diamonds sold to us be regulated through the Kimberley process. This year we’ve taken things a step further and started printing the following statement on our purchase orders;

“The Diamonds herein have been purchased from legitimate sources not involved in funding conflict and in compliance with UN resolutions. The seller herby guarantees that these diamonds are conflict free,based on personal knowledge and/or written guarantees provided by the supplier of these diamonds”

As a follow up and reminder to our existing suppliers we sent the following on our letterhead on November 10th;

To Whom It May Concern:

As you are aware, organizations in our industry agreed in 2003 on a program of self-regulation to complement the Kimberley Process created by the governments of nations involved in the diamond trade. We at J.R. Dunn Jewelers, welcomed the introduction of this global system to combat the illicit traffic in conflict diamonds and our policy has been to support the industry’s self-regulation program.

The core of that program is a chain of warranties that follows rough diamonds, polished diamonds and jewelry containing diamonds through the supply chain. For any diamond product we buy, we require you to make the following System of Warranties statement:

The diamonds herein invoiced have been purchased from legitimate sources not involved in funding conflict and in compliance with United Nations resolutions. The seller hereby guarantees that these diamonds are certified to be from sources that are free from conflict, based on personal knowledge, and/or written guarantees provided by the supplier of these diamonds.

As a trade member supporting this program, we are continuing to require our suppliers to subscribe to the warranty system and will therefore review any supplier that declines to participate. We request that you respond to this notification as soon as possible informing us if your organization supports this industry initiative.

Sincerely,

“The Blood Diamond” movie is set to open soon in theatre’s around the globe. Blood diamonds also known as “Conflict Diamonds” are those sold in order to fund armed conflict and civil war.

This movie is set in 1999 at the height of Sierra Leone’s civil war.In the very near future the general spotlight will be focused on the jewelry industry to demonstrate what we have done and what we are currently doing to prevent conflict diamonds from making it into the stores of retail jewelers across America.

As an industry we acted decisively back in 2000 with the start of the Kimberley Process to stem the flow of Conflict diamonds. And according to Russell Shor, a jewelry industry analyst for over 25 years, “Few industries-if any-have taken such steps without threat of legal sanctions.”

“The result was that conflict diamonds have reduced to about 1 percent of production by the time the wars ended in 2002.”

To learn more about positive things the diamond industry is doing to help please visit http://www.diamondfacts.org/

And stay tuned to find out what J.R. Dunn is doing today to further ensure its vendors comply with the Kimberly Process……..
