Russell Simmons is continuing his strong push to raise awareness for the Diamond Empowerment Fund - Starting on Monday a PSA is headed for TV illustrating the good that diamonds can do for the people in Africa who live in the regions where the gems are found. This powerful video portrays a story of a child that begins when he was born, follows him through school and finally show him becoming a doctor a treating a patient because of the education he was able to receive.

It turns out the supposed “largest diamond found” is nothing more than a chunk of plastic! The man at the center of all this, Brett Jolly, said he was duped by the current owners of the land in a scheme to get him to purchase the property! What happened to the garage grinder diamond verification test? Surely they couldn’t have really tried it because they would have know instantly it was plastic! I have only two more questions: “Why the heck did it take a month to confirm that it wasn’t a diamond?” and “How much do you think this piece of plastic will fetch on Ebay?”

Neiman Marcus has come out with their 2007 Holiday Catalog marking their 100th Anniversary. One of the items in the catalog is a 305 carats rough diamond from the company Diamond In The Rough. The diamond has hues of rich golden, green and amber, it’s a VERY unique stone.

Treasured in the past by royalty, Maharajas, Kings and Queens rough diamonds were believed to harness all the natural powers of the earth and would protect the wearer from harm. Diamond In The Rough is a company that makes wonderful fashion pieces featuring uncut rough diamonds. Statement pieces were created for individual clients and then caught the eye of celebrities, socialites and the fashion elite. Demand grew to the point that the company officially launched as a brand in 2003.

Queen Latifah and Jennifer Morrison both wore Diamond in the Rough jewelry on the 2007 Emmy’s red carpet! Both women looked gorgeous wearing the unique designer jewelry featuring rough diamonds. Queen Latifah donned earrings and a bracelet from Diamond in the Rough’s new Iceberg Collection and Jennifer wore the Orielle stud earrings.

We stumbled upon this cutting edge designer while at the Vegas Jewelry show and thought the pieces were GORGEOUS! We will be getting this wonderful collection into our stores soon….I can’t wait!

Not even the Feds can stop this marketing machine. Jacob the Jeweler is planning the world debut of his own vodka, called BOCAJ (not to be confused with BORAT), on September 8th at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas. I was happy to read that this didn’t just come from left field and at least there is some heritage to this new vodka endeavor. According to a great story from Vanity Fair Jacob’s father sold his own vodka, beer and wine in the 70’s when the family lived in the former Soviet Union. And keeping true to form, Bocaj is based on this “age-old family recipe derived from grapes versus the traditional wheat variety.” I don’t know anyone who has tried it yet but it sure looks like a great vodka from the outside at least. Wow is this one getting fishy! - According to Reuters, one of the first method used to test if the mineral found was a diamond was a garage grinder! The property developer, Brett Jolly, who isn’t in the diamond business stated “We put it on a garage grinder and it didn’t scratch, so what can it be?” …..What? No gemological testing yet? O.k. maybe they didn’t try to trick us but that’s very little scientific evidence to announce such a huge discovery on!

It took over one hundred years to finally trump the Cullinan, formally the worlds largest diamond, found near Pratoria in 1905. The new diamond discovery is rumored to weigh approximately twice the amount of the Cullinan (3106.75 ct) although exact weights were not released. Imagine a 6,200 carat plus diamond!

Reports are the diamond is on it’s way to Johannesburg under extremely tight security. Once it is there the diamond will be examined and photographed. A few insiders apparently leaked that the diamond was more like industrial quality rather than gem material like the Cullinan.
