Russell Simmons is continuing his strong push to raise awareness for the Diamond Empowerment Fund – Starting on Monday a PSA is headed for TV illustrating the good that diamonds can do for the people in Africa who live in the regions where the gems are found. This powerful video portrays a story of a child that begins when he was born, follows him through school and finally show him becoming a doctor a treating a patient because of the education he was able to receive.

Diamond Hoax | The Worlds Largest Diamond is a Fake!

It turns out the supposed “largest diamond found” is nothing more than a chunk of plastic! The man at the center of all this, Brett Jolly, said he was duped by the current owners of the land in a scheme to get him to purchase the property! What happened to the garage grinder diamond verification test? Surely they couldn’t have really tried it because they would have know instantly it was plastic! I have only two more questions: “Why the heck did it take a month to confirm that it wasn’t a diamond?” and “How much do you think this piece of plastic will fetch on Ebay?”

Diamond In The Rough: Neiman Marcus’s Holiday Catalog

Neiman Marcus has come out with their 2007 Holiday Catalog marking their 100th Anniversary. One of the items in the catalog is a 305 carats rough diamond from the company Diamond In The Rough. The diamond has hues of rich golden, green and amber, it’s a VERY unique stone.

Treasured in the past by royalty, Maharajas, Kings and Queens rough diamonds were believed to harness all the natural powers of the earth and would protect the wearer from harm. Diamond In The Rough is a company that makes wonderful fashion pieces featuring uncut rough diamonds. Statement pieces were created for individual clients and then caught the eye of celebrities, socialites and the fashion elite. Demand grew to the point that the company officially launched as a brand in 2003.

Queen Latifah & Jennifer Morrison wearing Diamond in the Rough: Celebrity Sighting

Queen Latifah and Jennifer Morrison both wore Diamond in the Rough jewelry on the 2007 Emmy’s red carpet! Both women looked gorgeous wearing the unique designer jewelry featuring rough diamonds. Queen Latifah donned earrings and a bracelet from Diamond in the Rough’s new Iceberg Collection and Jennifer wore the Orielle stud earrings.

We stumbled upon this cutting edge designer while at the Vegas Jewelry show and thought the pieces were GORGEOUS! We will be getting this wonderful collection into our stores soon….I can’t wait!

Mr. Bling’s New Thing | Jacob the Jeweler to Launch his own Vodka

Not even the Feds can stop this marketing machine. Jacob the Jeweler is planning the world debut of his own vodka, called BOCAJ (not to be confused with BORAT), on September 8th at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas. I was happy to read that this didn’t just come from left field and at least there is some heritage to this new vodka endeavor. According to a great story from Vanity Fair Jacob’s father sold his own vodka, beer and wine in the 70′s when the family lived in the former Soviet Union. And keeping true to form, Bocaj is based on this “age-old family recipe derived from grapes versus the traditional wheat variety.” I don’t know anyone who has tried it yet but it sure looks like a great vodka from the outside at least. Bocaj is presented in very “Jacob” styled bottle; it’s covered in frosted octehedral inspired shapes to resemble the look of “Diamonds in the Rough”. You are a marketing genius Jacob!

Is the Largest Diamond Find a Huge Hoax?

Wow is this one getting fishy! – According to Reuters, one of the first method used to test if the mineral found was a diamond was a garage grinder! The property developer, Brett Jolly, who isn’t in the diamond business stated “We put it on a garage grinder and it didn’t scratch, so what can it be?” …..What? No gemological testing yet? O.k. maybe they didn’t try to trick us but that’s very little scientific evidence to announce such a huge discovery on!

It seems like the guys who found this rock might have gotten a little ahead of themselves but it’s easy to see why. Until yesterday, the largest rough diamond found to date was the Cullinan diamond weighing in at 3107 carats and once polished the stone ended up being set in the sceptre of King Edward VII which is now in the Tower of London. Yesterdays unconfirmed diamond find in South Africa weighed in at over 8,000 carats, more than double the Cullinan!

Speculation is abound and I’m sure this will be all put to rest tomorrow. Is it a Diamond or isn’t it? Who know’s but I’m hoping these guys happen to luck out and we’ve got the diamond find of the Century in the making!

Oh and guys, please don’t try that grinder thing on your wife or your mom’s diamonds

Worlds Largest Rough Diamond Found!

It took over one hundred years to finally trump the Cullinan, formally the worlds largest diamond, found near Pratoria in 1905. The new diamond discovery is rumored to weigh approximately twice the amount of the Cullinan (3106.75 ct) although exact weights were not released. Imagine a 6,200 carat plus diamond!

Reports are the diamond is on it’s way to Johannesburg under extremely tight security. Once it is there the diamond will be examined and photographed. A few insiders apparently leaked that the diamond was more like industrial quality rather than gem material like the Cullinan.

However it can be argued that the term, gem material, can be applied a little more loosely today as than it was in the past. DeBeer’s, Tiffany and a relatively new company, Diamonds in the Rough, are all featuring pricey jewelry creations showcasing rough diamonds of all different sizes and qualities.

You can be sure we will be watching this developing story closely!

Diamonds in the Rough: Au Naturale Jewels we fell in love with!

In the late nineties we had a diamond cutting demonstration in our showroom courtesy of Lazare Kaplan. I can remember the moment like it was yesterday when the master cutter cleaved a rough diamond right in front of 50 of our best client’s eyes. Before the ceremony, we all got to hold the rough octahedral crystal and experience its’ raw beauty and luster first hand. We were so taken by it that my family and I purchased a rough diamond to display permanently in our showcase. Over the years we have watched our clients’ fascination when we tell them that’s what a diamond looks like in its’ raw state.

It’s this fascination that inspired us to forge a partnership with Diamond in the Rough this year at the JCK Jewelry show in Las Vegas. This avant-garde jewelry collection features natural diamonds in their uncut state accented by smalled polished diamonds.
