Fresh from Basel, it will be interesting to see what collections the big European jewelry houses will bring to the U.S. for the 2013 Couture show which starts in less than a month. It no secret that outside the world of diamonds, international watch brands and big name designer jewelry, demand has been kind of lack luster for generic goods. This is because there are no earth shattering trends that every jewelry manufacturer can ride the momentum of. In years past, the shift from yellow gold jewelry to white metals like platinum and white gold was remarkable. Countless clients couldn’t wait to reset their diamonds into new platinum settings from likes of Scott Kay and Jewels by Star. Soon yellow gold became passe and everyone had to have white. If you were producing above average jewelry designs in white gold or platinum in the late 90′s and early 2000 you struck gold! Of course the economy was flying when this seismic shift occurred and that didn’t hurt either.

Fast forward 15 years and nothing has moved the needle across all price points like the shift from yellow gold to white. Sure there have been bright spots, like the circle of love necklace from Roberto Coin that was featured on an iconic daytime TV show and then there was the watch with “feel good technology” which received a ton of press. Let’s not forget the “Year of the Dragon” and the John Hardy Naga Dragon collection which captured the essence of 2012; all of these were gigantic individual successes but they didn’t move the needle industry wide. The only thing that has even come close to the yellow – white shift was the alternative metal and sterling silver jewelry movement. It was challenging for many fine jewelers (with the exception of Tiffany and David Yurman retailers) to embrace in the beginning, but it ended up being such an important trend that it pulled many jewelers right through the recession.

Now that the recession seams to be easing, everyone in the jewelry business wishes they had a crystal ball to predict the next big thing. This is the main reason why jewelers from across the globe travel to trade fairs like Vicenza and Basel to try to get a jump on trends before the competition does.

At the Basel fair this year, multiple vendors said they are selling fewer things but what they are selling is extremely high quality. The big trend (other than it being the year of the snake) seems to be fine emeralds and other precious gemstone jewelry!

The prices have jumped considerably for the right articles. One wonders if this trend will carry over to the U.S. at the Couture Show that is right around the corner. It would be wonderful if it does because as jewelers, we love precious color and all things rare. There is nothing more rewarding than embracing a trend that has intrinsic value and will stand the test of time and to be ultimately cherished by future generations.

Jewelry trends for fall and winter 2008 – We are heading into our third day at the Couture 2008 jewelry show and I’m happy to report we haven’t been disappointed [...]

Jewelry trends for fall and winter 2008 – We are heading into our third day at the Couture 2008 jewelry show and I’m happy to report we haven’t been disappointed at all with the jewelry shown so far.

By far and away the strongest trends we have seen is the explosion of jewelry featuring organic shapes. The pearls in particular have been spectacular, especially the large baroque pearls from Yvel in black, white and gold mixed with diamonds.

As far as the over all color trends go, things seemed to have toned down from the days when shocking pink was the rule. The stones being feature in the jewelry are leaning once again towards the classics, including black, gray, brown and even some white. Some of the most outrageous pieces we saw actually featured large black diamonds, gray diamonds and rose cut diamonds.

Some of the trends from last year like rose gold, cuff bracelets, bangle bracelets, large hoop earrings and bold gold still have plenty of life left in them. However with the price of gold the way it is, some designers have tried to create gold jewelry pieces that still look bold but are actually wafer thin. These pieces were horrible! I know the suppliers wanted to keep the prices down but the style and feel didn’t translate at all. I think our clients want quality and substance when it comes to fine jewelry.

And for those of you who love designer jewelry like we do, there are tons of new pieces coming out from the top brands. We are expanding our current collections of Aaron Basha, John Hardy, Roberto Coin and Mikimoto tremendously. We are also adding quite few new exciting designers to our lineup (we’ll let you know who they are as soon as the product is on its way). And don’t worry guys, we haven’t forgot about you! We are bringing in a ton of edgy sterling silver men’s jewelry including designer cufflinks, heavy men’s bracelets and necklaces and quite a few accessories to boot.

More updates to follow as things progress…………

Thanks for reading,

Many of the pieces will feature the seahorse logo of Crystal Cruises.

This partnership comes as no surprise to the girls at J.R.Dunn. When our crew visited Rhonda’s designer jewelry display at the 2007 Couture show her genius was obvious. We fell in love with her 22kt textured bangles, link chains and hoop earrings.

I can remember the moment like it was yesterday when the master cutter cleaved a rough diamond right in front of 50 of our best client’s eyes. Before the ceremony, we all got to hold the rough octahedral crystal and experience its’ raw beauty and luster first hand. We were so taken by it that my family and I purchased a rough diamond to display permanently in our showcase. Over the years we have watched our clients’ fascination when we tell them that’s what a diamond looks like in its’ raw state.

It’s this fascination that inspired us to forge a partnership with Diamond in the Rough this year at the JCK Jewelry show in Las Vegas. This avant-garde jewelry collection features natural diamonds in their uncut state accented by smalled polished diamonds. I’m confident our clients will truly appreciate the mystique and understated elegance of these one of a kind rings, necklaces, and earrings.

This is way off topic for us, but what the heck! I’ve just finished reading an article from National Jeweler on Charles Rangel opening the JA jewelry show in New York with a message of support to small jewelers. He is aligned with the “Mom and Pop” jewelers on the subject of trying to impose sales tax on Internet sales to level the playing field against online jewelers who have an “unfair advantage.”

Let me first say that our company, J.R.Dunn Jewelers, is a “Mom and Pop” store and I would support the tax on Internet sales but for other reasons! I mean it’s o.k. if the states are losing too much money to keep the standards of education high or our streets safe; but to impose a sales tax to eliminate competition? This is terribly misguided and rather un-American! The American way is to promote fair competition and the last time I checked there was no ban for Mom and Pops to create a nice website for themselves and jump into the ring. Our countries’ entrepreneurial spirit is what keeps us ahead of the rest of the world.

Anyone else have an opinion on this?

Hello Everbody,

Well, this has been the most exciting show we have been to in almost 5 years. The rich colors of rose and yellow gold are dominating the jewelry fashions.

Enhancing the richness of the jewerly even more is the soft textured finishes shown by some of the top designers. Another aspect of the jewlery this year which I found particularly refreshing is the emphasis on jewelry with a meaning. There are many avant garde jewelry designers featuring antique coins, cameos, angels, lockets, zodiac signs and trees of life in their creations. These pieces represent sentiments from the past, an identity of who you are now, and what you can hope for in the future. How perfect for a nice charm bracelet!

Black and white jewelry has also made a nice come-back. Whether it’s black and white diamonds, or diamonds and black onyx, nothing is more elegant and striking for an evening outing than this stunning combination.

Other jewelry styles that are hot are hoops galore, stack bangles, rich karatage gold, wood jewelry, black and gold jewelry, smokey topaz jewelry mixed with rose gold and still long linky chains!

Oops time to get back to the show………….I’ll report more very soon!

Best,
